The Skincare Routine for Oily and Acne Prone Skin

This is a simple and effective method to treat oily or acne-prone skin types.
Our Back To Basic Skincare Series last week covered how to implement a minimal skincare regimen for dry and dehydrated skin using the right products. This blog will review a minimal skincare regimen that is suitable for oily or acne-prone skin types. We’ll also share with you the best products and formulas to help keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

Oily skin can be difficult to balance. For those with regular acne breakouts, the challenge is even more. While we cannot make them disappear overnight there are some ways that you can reduce their appearance and get your skin less reactive. We need to dispel some myths about excess oil production and breakouts in order to get those results.

Combination skin types, such as oily and combination, are genetically predisposed. This is the skin type you are born with, and it is not something you can treat or cure. When the skin produces too much sebum, it can lead to oily skin. This gives the skin a shiny and greasy appearance. The excess oil from this hyperactivity can cause pores to enlarge and overfill. The pores are clogged with sebum and dirt. Dead skin cells can get trapped under the skin’s surface and cause blackheads or whiteheads. Blackheads and whiteheads can form under the skin’s surface. This is known collectively as Acne.

A routine that balances oil production and prevents skin from becoming oily is the best way to reduce acne and oily skin. Avoid harsh, drying, or irritating products like alcohol, menthol, lemon and eucalyptus, as well as aromatic oils and rich formulations like bar soaps. These can clog pores and worsen the problem by increasing oil production.

These steps will help you create a simple, effective skin care routine.

STEP 1: Cleanser
To remove excess oil and buildup, cleanse your skin twice daily: morning and night. Use a mild, water-soluble facial cleaner. Avoid harsh scrubs or other harsh cleansing products, and avoid ingredients that can cause irritation. The tingling sensation is not a sign that your skin is healthier. It’s an indication of irritation and it can be harmful for all skin types.

STEP 2: Toner
This step is the most crucial. A well-formulated, alcohol-free exfoliating lotion will restore your skin’s natural calming and antioxidant properties, reduce the appearance of larger pores, and get rid of any makeup and dirt that might clog them. A salicylic acid exfoliating toner is great for oily skin because it is oil-soluble. It can penetrate the pores and unclog them from the roots.

STEP 3: Moisturiser
Oily skin types must stay hydrated, contrary to popular belief. This is essential to maintain a healthy dermis. To keep the skin healthy and functioning at its best, it is important to maintain proper hydration. For more information on the difference between dry and dehydrated skin, please read our Back To Basics skincare article. You should look for a lightweight, water-based moisturizer that is oil-free and doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy or clogged.

STEP 4: SPF
There are many sophisticated and elegant sunblock formulations available that are non-comedogenic and oil-free. The Gaggler prefers lotions that contain active ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which have been shown to reduce acne breakouts. Sun protection is also important to prevent pigmentation scarring.

STEP 5: Specific treatments and serums
You should consider incorporating a treatment serum that contains benzylperoxide to regulate oil production and reduce inflammation. A retinol-serum will also be beneficial for skin that is dry and sensitive at night. The powerful antioxidant niacinamide can be added to your skincare regimen. It helps reduce the appearance of large pores and soothes and calms the skin.
