How to Care for Your Skin in Men
You might be an outdoor guy who spends a lot of time outdoors, out in the sun and exposed to the elements. You might be more casual and indoors. You might be clean-shaven or have a full beard. It doesn’t matter what your lifestyle is. It’s essential to take care of your skin.
How to choose the right skincare products
The dermis layer of the skin in males born (DMAB) tends to be thicker than in women (DFAB). This results in more profound, furrowed lines due to repeated muscle movements. Your skin may also become oilier due to testosterone.
Skin types
There are four types of skin care:
Normal skin can take a wide range of skincare products without adverse effects.
Reddened, flaky skin may occur when it is exposed to winter elements. This type can also be caused by excessive washing and scrubbing of your skin. This skin type is more likely to develop eczema.
Sensitive skin reacts in different ways to different products. This skin type can cause you to experience skin reactions such as a rash, itching, redness, or burning after using new products.
Oily skin makes your face appear shiny and bright. You are more likely to get acne or breakouts if you have oily skin.
A combination of skin types can be found. This means that while the middle of your face might be oily, other parts, such as your cheeks and forehead, may be dry.
Important ingredients
At the very least, you should clean your skin and moisturize it. You are choosing which products to try and which ones can seem overwhelming. It can be easier to find the proper ingredients if you boil it down to three main goals: clean, moisturize, and protect. These are the ingredients to look out for when searching for moisturizers and cleansers.
Cleansers
Your old soap bar is the original cleanser. However, traditional soap products can be so effective at their jobs that they strip your skin’s natural oils while removing dirt, oil, and makeup. Look for a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. A cream-based cleaner is best for dry skin. However, a foaming cleanser will work better if your skin is a combination or oily.
Moisturizers
Moisturizers retain water, so the skin stays hydrated, plump, and complete. The ingredient that draws in moisture and keeps it there is hyaluronic acid. It would help if you also looked out for moisturizers with ceramides.
Ceramides are part of the skin’s fat and lipid layers. It helps to restore your skin barrier.
Salicylic acid and glycolic acid
These ingredients are crucial for acne care. Both chemically exfoliate your skin’s top layer, but salicylic acids can penetrate deeper into the oil glands.
Do not use fragrances.
Although everything smells the same these days, fragrances can irritate. Contact allergies can lead to red, itchy, or scaly skin reactions on the neck, face, and head. Even if the product is unscented, it can still cause allergic reactions.
You want something that’s fragrance-free. Some manufacturers may add a scent to mask what you are experiencing.
Contact allergy to fragrances can occur days, if not weeks after the product is applied.
Avoid alcohol-based aftershaves
It’s hard to beat that burn after a good shave. Although it may feel great initially, it can make your skin drier and less hydrated.
Although alcohol-based products have been used to prevent infection and act as an antiseptic, they can cause skin irritation, and a moisturizer is better than an alcohol-based aftershave.
Simple skin care regimen for men
You want to stick to the basics for a simple routine: Cleanse and moisturize, then protect.
Step 1 – Cleanse twice a day.
Your skin should be cleaned twice daily, once in the morning and before bed. You should clean your skin right after you exercise, especially if you do it in the morning.
Warm water is better than hot water as it can strip your skin’s oils. Massage the cleanser onto your skin with your fingertips, then rinse off thoroughly. Don’t dry the cleaner by rubbing it off. Instead, you will want to pat it dry.
Step 2: Moisturize twice a day.
After cleansing your skin, moisturize it to lock in the moisture that the idea is to restore the lipid barrier of your skin by maintaining its water. You can help protect yourself from chemicals and other irritants by restoring your skin barrier.
Step 3 – Apply sunscreen in the morning.
It is essential to use sunscreen daily as UV rays can accelerate aging, pigmentation, and wrinkle formation (even on a cloudy day). Sunscreen can also help prevent skin cancer.
Additional tricks for shaving
One of the biggest concerns for men is shaving. It would help if you did not use alcohol-based aftershaves. There are still other things you can do.
After a hot or warm shower, your facial hair will feel softer. Make sure to clean it first.
To prevent rashes and ingrown, use a mild, bland shaving oil.
To reduce irritation, shave in the direction of hair growth. An electric razor with safety features can help dry or irritate the skin.
After shaving, moisturize your skin with a mild moisturizer. An oil-based product is also available for dry skin.
To remove any ingrown hairs that you may be prone to, apply a mild exfoliant (such as a gentle facial scrub) to your skin at least once a week.
