Pimple On Lip

You should be worried if you have a pimple on the lip or your upper lip. It can be complicated to deal with spots in this delicate area.

However, there are enough dermatologist-recommended ways of treating pimples on lips effectively. Let’s see what happens.

Is it possible to get a pimple on your lips?

Pimples, also known as pustules, can appear anywhere on your skin. Spots can be caused by inflammatory acne. They form when hair follicles become clogged with dirt, oil, and bacteria [ 1].

What causes pimples on the lips?

Pimples around the lips are commonly caused by excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The lips can also be affected by hormonal imbalances [ 2]. To rule out this, you can have a blood test.

Lip balms, mascara, toothpaste, and shaving cream can contain ingredients that irritate skin, clog pores, and cause pimples. Pimples can also be caused by stress and certain medications.

How to Get Rid Of Pimples on Your Lip?

Pimples around the lips or on the lipline are not usually a concern. These can be easily treated with simple home remedies.

Warm or cold Compress

A cold compress can reduce inflammation and pain caused by a pimple on the lip. Apply a cold compress to your spot twice daily for at least a minute. Keep doing this until you notice a decrease in the size of your pimple.

A hot compress can also reduce inflammation caused by pimples on the lips. If the spot has become infected, it can drain the pus.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can treat a pimple or other problems around the lips. It has antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory properties. All skin types can use topical tea tree oil. You can do a patch test if you are still concerned about allergic reactions.

Toothpaste

Did you think toothpaste was only for your teeth? You might need to be corrected. The toothpaste contains hydrogen peroxide (and alcohol) which can dry out and shrink pimples along the upper and lower lips. They can also be relieved by cooling agents such as menthol.

OTC Soaps And Creams

If you have a pimple, you need to be extra careful. To remove dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, use a mild cleanser at least twice daily. Exfoliants should be avoided as they can dry the skin and signal your sebaceous cells to produce more sebum. It would help if you looked for lightweight, non-greasy, and non-comedogenic moisturizers.

Turmeric

This kitchen ingredient is excellent for treating a pimple or ringing in the lips. Curcumin and turmeric have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties due to their yellow pigment. Make a paste by mixing turmeric and water. After 10 minutes, apply the paste to your lip pimple. Repeat this process twice daily until you notice a decrease in the pimple’s size.

Castor Oil

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to heal wounds. Castor oil’s ricinoleic acid reduces inflammation and inhibits the growth of bacteria that can cause acne. Leave the pimple covered with a few drops of castor oil overnight. Rinse the pimples with water the next day.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoylperoxide [ 3] destroys bacteria that causes lip pimples. You can find it in cleansers, creams, soaps, and gels. Benzoyl peroxide could be used in your evening and morning skin care routines. You can control the drying effects by using a moisturizer.

Dermatologic Treatments

If you have persistent pimples on your lips, consult your dermatologist. Topical medications such as salicylic acid [ 4], retinoids, or antibiotics will be prescribed to you.

Oral medications – Your dermatologist will evaluate your acne. You’ll receive antibiotics after your dermatologist has determined the severity of your acne.

Your dermatologist will perform in-office treatments such as laser therapy, chemical Peels [ 5] or microdermabrasion to treat pimples.

To prevent your skin from drying out and producing excessive sebum, drink at least 3 litres of fluids daily.

Avoid putting lipstick on your bed, as it can cause pores to clog.

Avoid using greasy or comedogenic skin products, as they can irritate the lips and upper lips.

A healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients should be followed. Avoid sugars, fats, and other substances that can cause skin inflammation around your lips.

Avoid popping pimples on your lips. Popping or squeezing the lips can cause damage to the skin barrier, infecting the surrounding pores. You may see more pimples around your lips.

Can A Pimple Cause My Lip To Swell?

The lip can swell if there is a pimple around or on the lips. Cystic acne, the most severe form of acne, can cause severe swelling.

Placing a hot towel on the affected area can reduce swelling and eliminate pus. Hot compresses should make a significant difference within 24 hours. Don’t pick at the swelling lip.
