Hair Colour For Women
You aren’t the only one who is trying to change your hair color. Although ombre has made a comeback, 2022’s ombre is subtler and more blended than ever before. This only adds to confusion between ombre & balayage. We have a few Redken Artists who can help you understand the differences and choose the right one for you. Marie Eve Faucher Jaclyn Hart and Twylla Ja Jane will help you understand what you really need to ask your stylist. For more information on the ultimate match-up: ombre vs. Balayage, read on.
What is BALAYAGE?
Balayage is a professional color technique that gives your hair a subtle, natural highlight effect. Balayage is a French term meaning “to sweep” and refers to how the color is applied. This technique allows your stylist to hand-paint the color onto the hair. It creates a natural, graduated effect that has the same beautiful dimension and color as traditional highlights. Highlights typically require foils. However, this painting technique allows for longer transitions between darker and lighter colors. It is more natural-looking than traditional stripy highlights. Balayage can be used to create natural, sun-kissed highlights and adjust the dimension of lowlights.
What is OMBRE HAIR?
Ombre is a dramatic and gradient effect in hair color. Ombre involves separating the hair into two sections of contrasting colors and then gradually blending them from one to another. French-derived ombre also means “to shade”. The darker shade is usually at the roots, while the lighter shade is on the bottom. However, some people prefer to have the reverse effect, which is known as reverse ombre. This color change mainly affects the ends of the hair. The transition from roots to ends is quite short.
So what is the difference between OMBRE and BALAYAGE?
Balayage, which is the method of applying color to the skin, and ombre, which refers to the style or effect of blending colors together, are both shorthands.
Twylla Jane was asked to explain the differences in techniques between them to help us differentiate. “Ombre is usually done horizontally using full saturation. Then the lightener is blended upwards to diffuse the lines. She explains that Balayage uses smaller sections, where color is painted onto the hair’s surface. While ombre can be used horizontally, Balayage is vertical.
Both haircolors are easy to maintain, as they can be applied in either a gradual (for Ombre) and sweeping (for Balayage). For example, regular foil highlights require more frequent visits to the salon. It will however cost you. Although the actual service and the result can be costly, the final look will not require any maintenance.
Jaclyn says Ombre and Balayage are both highly specialized and often require more time and money in the salon. It is an easy to maintain result but it is important to continue haircare treatments and regular visits to the salon in order to achieve optimal color results.
OMBRE OR BALAYAGE, WHICH IS BETTER?
The good news? You can achieve either look by anyone, depending on your preference. Both look great on all hair types and textures. Both can be combined to create an ombre effect.
The look you want to achieve will determine which technique is best for you. Your artist should be able work with you to achieve the desired color effect, regardless of whether you are looking for a blonde, brunette or red hairstyle.
Balayage can be used to achieve a natural and subtle look. Talk to your stylist about the desired result. Make sure you bring a reference picture! Jaclyn states that there are many creative options.
The amount of hair you are changing can affect how often you need to have it done. Your stylist might need to work with you on getting your desired color. She says that hair lifting is not a quick process and that it may take a while. A slower lift is safer.
HOW DO I MAKE MY BALAYAGE OR OMBRE LAST?
It is important to protect your hair during ombre and balayage. Your scalp’s pH balance is affected when your hair color changes, no matter if it is lighter or darker. Talk to your stylist to find out what is best for your hair to keep it healthy and feeling great. After lightening, strengthening weak bonds and balancing your hair’s pH, the Acidic bonding concentrate is a must-have. Ask your stylist if the treatment is available and make sure you have enough to last you a while.
