Budget-friendly Day Trip To The Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains National Park can be reached by train in two hours from Sydney. The Blue Mountains are easily accessible from Sydney. They’re also a great stop on an Australia itinerary. The Blue Mountains are part of the Great Divide and are spread out over 1000 miles. They offer great hiking and scenic views. The blue forests in the park give the mountains their name.
Many tours depart from Sydney to visit the Blue Mountains. These tours can be expensive, and you might be rushed to see the sights. I took the train from Katoomba to the Blue Mountains because it was more affordable. We purchased Hop-On/Hop-Off Blue Mountain Explorer Bus tickets once we arrived. This provided transportation around the entire park. We were able to enjoy the Blue Mountains for the whole day by taking our own day trip.
How to take the train to katoomba
You must first go to Sydney’s Central Railway Station to catch the train to Katoomba. Using your Opal Transport Card, the train to Katoomba will cost you about $6 one way. Katoomba is about two hours away from Sydney’s central area. The trains run every hour and even more often during rush hour. The train schedule can be found online.
The Blue Mountain Explorer office is located right next to Katoomba’s train station. Signs should also direct you to the correct location. If you have not booked your tickets online, you can purchase them in the office. Every 30 minutes, buses leave from each station. The loop takes 60 minutes.
Websites to visit
The Blue Mountains are home to a variety of attractions. The Blue Mountain Explorer has 29 stops. It is best to do some research beforehand and decide which stops you want to visit. It is important to make the best use of your limited time. Prepare to spend all day exploring. You will receive a brochure with all the information about the stops. This allows you to plan on the spot.
This is a list of the places we visited during our affordable blue mountains day trip in sydney.
Stop 1, Katoomba Falls (30 Minutes)
The small waterfall can be reached by walking from the bus stop. This is a beautiful scenic stop that is very peaceful.
Stop 2 – Scenic World (2 Hours)
Scenic World, one of the Blue Mountains’ main attractions, is a must-see. Scenic World is a combination of a cableway, railway, skyway, and walkway, all of which provide stunning views of Blue Mountains National Park. There is a fee for this attraction. The gift shop still has some views.
Stop 3: Blue Mountain Chocolate Company (30 minutes)
Blue Mountain Chocolate Company is the ideal place to stop for a snack and rest after some walks. The Blue Mountain Chocolate Company offers a wide variety of baked goods and homemade hot chocolate.
Stop #4: Echo Point/The Three Sisters (40 minutes)
The Three Sisters are one of the most famous spots in the park. Echo Point is the best place to view this trio of sandstone structures. If you’re at Echo Point, yell loudly and watch to see if your scream is echoed back.
Stop #5: Honeymoon Lookout (30 Minutes)
Honeymoon Lookout can be reached by walking from the bus stop. The walk along the cliffside offers stunning views of the Three Sisters and the park.
Stop #6: Leura Cascades (1 Hour)
Leura Cascades has many waterfalls, and the views are amazing at the end. Allow at least one hour to complete the hike. If you wish to take in the view, allow for more time.
Stop 7: Leura Village (1 hour)
Leura Village has the best food and shopping. You will find many unique shops and tasty restaurants. You will spend at least an hour if you don’t want to stay longer.
How much does it cost to visit the blue mountains?
Round-trip train tickets from Sydney cost $12 per person.
Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus Pass (unlimited usage for the day) – $36/person just for the pass, or $65/person with Scenic World admission included.
The cost of a day in the Blue Mountains is $48 per person (most tours are $100 per person!)
This stunning National Park is well worth a day trip from Sydney. Dress warmly if you are visiting during winter. We weren’t prepared for the cold, even though we did a lot of hiking. Pack snacks. There are only a few places to eat as food is not available at every stop.
